My favorite form of therapy is Client-Centered,
or humanistic. This type of therapy works on the belief that all people possess
an innate drive to evolve towards their ideal self, towards a state that Maslow
called self-actualization. I find it comforting and empowering to believe that
all people have the power and ability to identify and address their own issues
on their own terms.
Client-centered therapy is also beneficial
because the client-patient relationship is so crucial. The job of the therapist
is to create a completely open and honest relationship in a free and accepting
environment. With unconditional positive regard from the therapist, the client
can feel completely free to express all of their thoughts and emotions without
inhibition or fear of rejection. Because this environment doesn’t occur often
outside of therapy, the client is liberated and allowed to discover for
themself thoughts and feelings that would otherwise be repressed and
unaddressed, causing other issues later on.
